The unassuming and unfinished facade of this church masks an incredible work of art (In similar fasion to the unfinished facade of San Lorenzo church in Florence).

This art, is the Fresco cycle named "The legend of the true cross" (or more appropriately "Leggenda della Vera Croce"), painted by Piero della Francesca. The work was commissioned by the Bacci family and completed around 1457. The Frescoe is in the Choir, the area brhind the Alter.

These frescoes underwent serious restorations (from 1985 to 2000!) and now vibrantly show in detail, the fascinating legend of True Cross ? a cycle in which the wood from the Garden of Eden becomes the Cross on which Christ was crucified and travels around various battles and historical scenes.

You can enter the church and see the Frescoes of free, but to get up close into the Choir area you?ll need to reserve tickets in advance (5-6 euro).
