Newt: "High End Hats and Aloha Shirts" Top 5 Page for this destination Honolulu Shopping Tip by Hopkid

Honolulu Shopping: 97 reviews and 225 photos

Housed on the grounds of the historic Royal Hawaiian Hotel (there's also a shop in the Hitlon Hawaiian Village), Newt specializes in fine Aloha shirts and woven Ecuadorian hats, commonly referred to as Panama hats. Shirt designs are based on vintage patters and custom printed by a local textile manufacturer who has been making such fabric for years. Similarly, shirts and dresses are produced by local tailors who have been doing such work for ages. The mostly tropical and floral patterns are beautiful.

Woven hat material is purchased directly from weavers in Ecuador and brought to the U.S. to be blocked, formed, and finished. There are various styles of hats including hats for women. Hats hang from the wall behind the register counter and owner Jim will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. He'll also be happy to talk to you about any topic you may or may not bring up! ; )

Newt also carries, depending on availability, restored vintage watches from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. They usually have some really beauties in the display case. Be sure to ask Jim if he's wearing his vintage Hamilton Ventura.

What to buy: Aloha pattern shirts and dresses, Ecuadorian hats, vintage watches.

What to pay: Shirts run around $80. Depending on the weave and style, the hats can range from $200 on up to $5000.
