The Habsburg Dynasty called Hofburg home from the 1200s until 1918. The elegant palace you see today was originally a medieval fortress which has been constantly expanded over the years to comprise of 2,600 rooms today.
There are many famous parts of the palace. The original Alte Burg still stands but has lost much of its original characteristics with the various construction phases over the years. The Imperial Treasury still holds the jewels of the Holy Roman Empire and the Austrian Empire. The Palace Chapel is home to the Vienna Boys Choir. The famous Lipizzaner stallions can be viewed in the Stallburg wing of the palace at the Spanish Riding School. The Imperial wine was stores in the 3 floors of cellars below the palace, but today the cellars hold plaster models of the fountains and statues on the grounds. The Hofburg is also home to the Austrian National Library.
Much of the Hofburg is open to the public including the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum, and the Imperial Silver Collection. Also in the vicinity are the open park areas of the Volksgarten, Burggarten, Heldenplatz, and Maria-Theresien Platz.
