Ptolemais

Ptolemais was founded in the 4th century BC and its privileged position as one of the five cities of the Pentapolis continued under the Romans.
The city fell into decline with the arrival of the invading Arab armies in the 7th century.
Ptolomais houses the largest cisterns in North Afrika.
At the agora, a staircase just off-centre leads down into the cisterns, wich received water from mountain springs 25 km east of Ptolomais via an aquaduct.
