Unbeatable as far as Italian Piazzas go. This is the heart of Siena and the entire city is reachable from this square. Grab a seat at a cafe or a gelato and spend a moment.

The piazza was completed in 1349 and is divided into 9 segments representing the Council of 9 that ruled Medieval Siena. Of course this is also where the famous bareback horse rase, the Palio is held; where the competing contrade (Sienas districts) race for bragging rights.

I learned that Color "burnt Siena" is named after the earthy color of the buildings in the square (Rick Steves). More importantly, 6 month old Isabella had her first Gelato in the Square in 2003...
