A typical ferry to Bengkalis, Indonesia

One of the ways to get to Bengkalis is to take a ferry from the Sekupang ferry terminal at Batam Island next to Singapore. Please see my VT Batam page for more information on how to get from Singapore to Batam Island. At the Sekupang ferry terminal, there are several ferry services to Bengkalis and speaking in Indonesian language is needed. The ferries leave early in the morning about 8.30am, so be there early. There are 2 sea routes, one is direct from Batam to Bengkalis (about 3 hours) in the open sea and the waves can be rough. The other is taking a route along the various islands, making stops at Karimun Island and Selatpanjang (this route takes slightly longer time but the sea is not so rough as the waves are blocked by the islands). The ferry tickets are affordable (about US$15 the most). Other ways of getting to Bengkalis are ferry services from the town of Muar in Malaysia across the Straits of Melaka to Bengkalis, and a road trip from Pekanbaru (capital city of Riau province).
