Bode Museum was designed by architect Ernst von Ihne and completed in 1904. Originally it was called Kaiser Friedrich Museum but was renamed in honour of its first curator Wilhelm von Bode in 1956.
The museum houses large collections of sculptures, Byzantine art, coins and medals. The sculpture collection displays art of the Christian Orient, Coptic Egypt, sculptures from Byzantium, Ravenna, Middle Ages, the Italian Gothic, Renaissance and Prussian Baroque.
The coin cabinet (Muenzkabinett) houses one of the world's largest numismatic collections, from the beginnings of minting (Asia Minor) in the 7th century BC up to the present day.
