There is so much to do around Zion it's hard to choose. The Kolob Reservoir Rd leaves RT9 from Virgin and is paved up to the Reservoir. Along this route are some great views and also some nice hiking.

I like to go up in the heat of Summer and do the Northgate Peak hike. An easy one but usually not crowded. Temperatures will be about 10-15 F. less than the floor of Zion.

Continuing up the road you come to the Lava Pt viewing area, don't miss it.

At the end you reach the Reservoir, a nice place to have lunch. Alot of the land up here is private but there are plenty of places to pull over and enjoy the area.

You can take the road over the mountain to Cedar Breaks N.M. or Cedar City. The road ends at RT 14 and going East takes you to RT89, north to Bryce, South to Zion via the East entrance. I recommend you do this from late Spring to Late Fall. Leave a day open for this and take in Ceadr Breaks, too.
