Ecole Polytechnique is one of the "Grandes Ecoles" much sought-after by French students. [see my local custom tip for more information] The Polytechnique was connected to the miltary for a long time and you can still see some of the old uniforms around.
The historic building at the foot of rue Descartes is no longer used by the university, which has moved to a large suburban campus [see website below], but includes offices of the Education Ministry. I gained access to the garden and its views through a good friend who works there now and who, ironically, missed the cut-off for admission into the Polytechnique by just one point! Of such stuff are careers changed in France.
In both pictures you can see the spire of St. Etienne du Mont and the round dome of the Pantheon. Not a bad atmosphere in which to work.
