"Michaelangelo's Pieta" Vatican City Things to Do Tip by andrewyong

Vatican City Things to Do: 800 reviews and 1,514 photos

For the uninitiated (like a friend of mine), the word "Pieta" refers to the topic depicted in various paintings and sculptures showing the dead Christ lying on his mother Mary's lap.

Michaelangelo's Pieta inside the basilica is now behind a bomb-proof glass as it was bombed to pieces in the 1980s by a crazy man, then meticulous piced back together to look like nothing had happened to it. You could see the brilliance of the sculptor depicting even the veins on the bodies of his subjects. The sculpted marble look almost lifelike.
