"The incorrupt bodies of Popes" Vatican City Things to Do Tip by andrewyong

Vatican City Things to Do: 800 reviews and 1,514 photos

In the basilica itself, along the left aisle lies the incorrupt body of Pope St Pius X, with his face covered in a golden mask.

A new addition (which I haven't seen) is the body of Pope Blessed John XXIII, which was beatified by the late Pope John Paul II in 2003. His body was found perfectly preserved when it was exhumed for identification purposes following his successful cause for sainthood. The bodies of popes are not embalmed by tradition.
