"Edinburgh Castle" Edinburgh Castle Tip by Tom_Fields
Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh: 252 reviews and 448 photos
If you see just ONE thing in Edinburgh, see the castle. Standing atop Edinburgh Rock, the castle towers over the city. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times. This is where the city began. The Castle began as a fort, then served as a prison, and is now home to the Scottish crown jewels. In August, it is host to the Edinburgh Tattoo, a huge military ceremony. The view from the Castle is tremendous.
This is the center of Scotland's illustrious military heritage. Every day, at exactly 1:00 pm, a cannon is fired. The Castle also has an impressive collection of weapons and military regalia.
The oldest part, which remains in use today, is the Chapel. This modest building dates to the 12th century. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Margaret, who died at the Castle after learning of the death in battle of her husband King Malcolm III. They were buried side by side at Dunfermline Abbey.
