Worth the few minutes to drive uphill on main st. to the top of the Berkely pit just to see it, but once you are there, there is a memorial to the miners that were killed in June of 1917 in a mine fire. Their names are all etched in the stones that pave the path and there are memorials and their story overlooking the pit. 168 men died in the granite/speculator fire. Evidently one of the most up to date ventilation systems for a mine of the time, ironically contributed to their deaths because of the fire.

Address: main st and up
Directions: enter the town of Walkerville, past the church and turn right

Review Helpfulness: 4.5 out of 5 stars
