"Impressive Rotunda :-)" Top 5 Page for this destination National Gallery of Art Tip by matcrazy1
National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.: 84 reviews and 236 photos
As soon as I entered the West Building of National Gallery of Art and passed through security check-up I was totally amazed by impressive, huge Rotunda surrounded by marble columns with centrally located marble fountain. It's a massive dome reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome (built in 27 BC-25 BC, destroyed by fire and rebuilt after 125 AD).
Dark marble floor and high columns contrast with light walls and light coming inside through the oculus (central part of the dome). The empty and huge space and dark marble make unique, a bit solemn atmosphere contrasting with "more human" look of the longitudinal sculpture halls to the right and left.
