National Air and Space Museum, Washington D.C.: 108 reviews and 264 photos
National Air and Space Museum (NASM) is housed in long, rectangular building which stretches along southern part of the National Mall. Hmm... it's not my favourite piece of architecture. But it's the world's largest collection of historic air and spacecraft and as a Smithsonian Institution it's free for visitors daily 10.00 am - 5.30 pm.
Like in all DC's museums I had to go through security check-up first but there were very short lines when I entered the museum (weekend in October). Keep in mind that the following items are NOT PERMITTED in the museum: tripods, guns, knives, pen knives, pets, food/drinks, scissors, aerosol cans, tools, smoking. Cameras and bottled water is allowed. Check up-to-date info here. On the entrance door to the museum it's stated: no food, drinks, gum permitted in the museum. So, I am not sure about bottled water. Once Urszula was not let in another SI museum because of having an open bottle of mineral water (the large one).
Between one and two hours is needed to see quickly most of the museum; for dedicated fans of displayed stuff hmm... at least the whole day. The museum opened new location the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport in 2003. This exhibition grows step by step to store more and more exhibits. There are shuttle buses between the two museum locations ($12; tickets sell out quickly!; up-to-date details here)
