The cathedral is in the Pisan Romanesque style - elegant, refined, with four levels of colonnades on the facade and a unique elliptical dome, in its time the only one in Europe. On the south transept the 12th century Porte San Ranieri has a pair of fine bronze doors by Bonanno which depict biblical scenes. Atop the cathedral apse sits a copy of a big bronze griffin. The original is in the nearby Museo del Duomo and is believed to have come from Egypt in the 11th century.
