"What a beautiful Building!" Hermitage Tip by divandrea
Hermitage, Saint Petersburg: 279 reviews and 544 photos
Hermitage is worlds second largest museum after the Louvre, so it's huge (five buildings, one of them the Winter Palace of Tsar Peter II. He wasn't satisfied with your average house or even your average palace) . At the inside, the buildings could definitely do with a make over. Many of the curtains look, well, old, the lightning is definitely out of date and some of the walls urge for a new painting. But still: don't miss Hermitage when in St. Petersburg. Just count in enough time and don't expect to see everything. Try to grab one of the leaflets in the entrance hall. They're in Russian. But you will be so glad about having general directions as soon as you're lost for the first time (and you will, trust me). Since signposting is just crap and the place is so huge and full of corners, you almost never find what you're looking for. And don't expect too much about the exhibits: Hermitage does with quantity not quality. They've got hundreds of thousands of paintings, archaological findings, books, furniture and so on. Many walls are just so full of paintings, it's hard to have a look at just one of them. But I don't think anybody really goes to the Hermitage because of the exhibit. It's the beautiful architecture of Winter Palace that alone is worthwile the flight to St. Petersburg. And parts of the exhibitions give you an insight about how the Tsars and their family lived in splendor and plenty. Even if this sounds so negative, it's not. Hermitage is unbelievable, an absolute must see!
