The fantastic Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute stands at the junction between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco on the lagoon.
The church was built in1630 by Baldassare Longhena, to thanks the Virgin Mary to stop the plague in the town. It was finally completed in 1681.
The church is constructed of Istrian stone and brick covered with marble dust. It is full of Marian symbolism - the great dome represents her crown, the cavernous interior her womb, the eight sides the eight points on her symbolic star.
Inside the church you can see the altarpiece of the Baroque high altar and paintings made by Titian: St Mark enthroned with SS Cosmas, Damian, Sebastian and Roch, the altarpiece of the great sacristy, David and Goliath, Abraham and Isaac and Cain and Abel.
