"Exploring Bastille Area" Walking Tip by pedroswift
Walking, Paris: 261 reviews and 509 photos
Wander by Opera Bastille?s steps on Friday evening in summer. Motor Bikers by the score gather with their machines to chat. Cross the road to Indiana Café for a beer and texmex. Not gourmet food but a great people watching location. Falstaff next door has a huge range of beers from around the world.
At the Opera, take in a show: opera even. Book into the legendary Brasserie Bofinger for supper. Try Choucroute d?Alsace washed down with Alsatian Reisling. Look for the oyster bar on the side walk outside. We were able to book the show and supper on a combined ticket. (Brasserie Bofinger, 7 rue de la Bastille, Paris. Tel 0033 1 42 72 87 82).
If you must, hire a bike or inline skates in Bvd Bourdon (sw of the column).see Paris à vélo c'est sympa, 37 Boulevard Bourdon or use the Velib Bike Hire System.
Out of sight ,in a tunnel under Bastille, is the canal St Martin - take a guided tour by boat.
On Sunday & Thurday, visit the marché Richard Lenoir held in Bvd R-L, north of the July Column. Try the small green cantaloupes. (500 percent better tasting than the ones we get in Aust.) Buy stuff at the market for a picnic in the park on the eastern side of the Arsenal Marina (south of the column). Or on any day, visit Lenotre, an up-market (read 'expense') traiteur just a short walk west of the column and grab some gourmet take-away. Looking for cheaper eats?? : try the Asian take-aways or the creperies north east of the column. Head for the same park ; eat; watch the boats and dream about a life on the waterways or, if you are with family, take your kids to the playground at the east side of marina.
