A Wildlife Paradise of Bromeliads & Hanging Vines

The birdlife view was fantastic from atop the Mundo Perdido pyramid, because it was actually not much higher than the top of the jungle itself. We had our binoculars with us so were able to get some great views and sounds of Lorikeets, Toucans and Oropendola as they colourfully flitted from tree to tree. The setting of the sun seemed to get them really stirred up before they had to settle down for the night.

In both Belize and Guatemala, I was amazed at the profusion of vines and lianas hanging from the jungle trees, much more than I had ever seen before in Africa or Asia. Tarzan would have loved Central America! Of course, parasitic plants like bromeliads and orchids also like to have a perch up in these trees where they can catch some sunlight, and they also provide habitat for other smaller creatures of the jungle. Sitting at the canopy level of the jungle on 1500 year old Mayan ruins in the refreshing breezes seemed like an excellent way to wind down our first and only night in Guatemala!
