Captain Robert Decatur Israel married Maria Arcadia Machado de Alipas Israel, who was related to the Machados of Old Town San Diego. Israel became assistant Keeper, then promoted to Keeper until March 1891. He was this lighthouse's last Keeper. Here you see docents in costume representing this couple of the original lighthouse days, ready to answer questions and to give historical reference to those who are interested.

Anilluminating talk on the fashions of the earlier settlers includes volunteers from the audience being dressed in Spanish styles.

"If the lady's dress is closed from the back, you know she's rich enough to have servants to help her button the dress." The docent informs the gathered group of visitors.

Various demonstrations such as this can be seen throughout the day. Maybe you or one of your children can be a volunteer during a visit.

They didn't do this for years and then they started. I haven't been there for a while so don't know if they are keeping it up. I should go up and check it out.
