  Part of the walled city
by sourbugger

With some of the best preserved walls I have ever seen, a walk of the circuit of the walls of this city is an absolute must (a few small section are not fully open at times)

On the inside of the walls you can see the geometric 'diamond' of the town whilst on the outside the residential areas can be seen - especially the Bogside. This side of town is predominately Catholic, but one Protestant enclave exists with high surrounding fences to protext them, and a abundance of Red,White and Blue paint inside. Indeed it is difficult to spot a kerbstone, Telegraph pole, bench or tree that dosn't have these colours daubed all over them.

A walk here gives you a valuable glimpse at the history, with several notice boards explaining the various section. Some of the history is comparitively recent : such as the column to a former governer that was blown up in the 1970's.
