If going to Mexico, you must visit Taxco and San Miguel de Allende. I found these two towns left the biggest impression on me. Taxco is a famous colonial town known for its silver industry. The surrounding mountains are teeming with silver mines and thus throughout history Taxco has been an important economic outpost. I say outpost simply because its location is exotic in the sense that it's built on a mountainside. To get there, one must drive through winding mountain roads. Upon getting there one sees the most beautiful colonial town with cobblestone streets and a very old spanish church. Everyone is out on the streets. It's a very lively town. Going to Taxco is like going back in time. I recommend it as a one to two day excursion.
San Miguel de Allende is another colonial gem. It's an artist mecca. Here, you'll find a dozen or more art schools and you'll meets expatriots from all over the world. It has a charm about it and the people (like always) are great.
If you like old places with charm and beautiful views, then go to Taxco and San Miguel de Allende. The local restaurants offered superb dishes and there were plenty of small shops with great gifts and jewlery.

Directions: San Miguel de Allende is about four hours north of Mexico city. Taxco is about the same but south.
