"Iceland's culture and subculture are really going on." Anda Klavina
The cathedral itself is an architectural marvel. Designed in order to recreate the lava flows and columnar jointing that occurswhen the lava cools, it really is a wonder to look at the meeting of man and nature. It commands over the whole city and can be seen from miles away. What surprised me was the magnitude of the building in comparison with the dwarf of a door! The entrance does not strike as being particularly inviting and we did assume that the cathedral might have been closed but apparently this is just another quirky Icelandic method of pushing tourists away. We ventured in and saw that it wasn't closed but that the rest of the nation seemed to think it was. The cathedral was empty and silent which I supposed turned out to be a plus for us. After greeting the priest we went inside and found the interior to be even more amazing. The vaults are incredibly high and the organ truly is a redeeming feature. It is a shame that the altar is cordoned off as the windows behind this raise platform are said to have fantastic views over the city. Great architecture here and a reflective opportunity to muse. There is small giftshop selling postcards and other cathedral memorabilia and an opportunity to pay for a visit to the top of the cathedral.
