"Kastellholmen" Kastellholmen Tip by Pieter11
Kastellholmen, Stockholm: 2 reviews and 4 photos
If Skeppsholmen is a small island, then Kastellholmen is a tiny one. The island is situated just south from Skeppsholmen and is only connected by one single bridge.
In 1660 a citadelwas built on this island, on top of the steep hill. It was built to protect the entrance of Stockholm from enemies coming from the East Sea. The current citadel of Kastellholmen has its origin in 1848, when it replaced the old one. At 12 PM on weekdays and at 1 PM in the weekend, salute shots are fired from the castle, and every morning the Swedish Marine flag is put into the top of the citadel.
Right in front of this island, the battleship "Vasa" sank during its first trip. This ship, that sank in 1628, is now shown at Djurgardens-island, in a special museum.
