Duomo Santa Maria Assunta - Cathedral, Parma: 13 reviews and 47 photos
The great Romanesque church was built in the second half of the 11th century and became a cathedral in 1106, but it was widely rearranged between 1130 and 1178. The sandstone facade has three series of little loggias and a protiro with two lions supporting columns, which Giambono da Bissone added in 1281.
The church has a Latin-cross shape and consists of a nave with two aisles. It has been undergoing a restoration from 1981 to this year, when Parma celebrates the 900 years since the proclamation of the cathedral and the end of the works at the facade. I didn't photograph the facade during my visit in 2004 because it was still covered with scaffolding.
