Built in 1888, Cathédrale Saint-Georges des Maronites lies near Place des Martyrs in Downtown Beirut. It was modelled on Italian Neoclassical church architecture, complete with a polychrome marble interior. It is the cathedral church of the Maronite community, Lebanon's largest Christian sect, which is one of the Eastern Rites Churches in communion with the Pope. During the 75-90 civil war, the cathedral suffered severe damage, but it has since been restored.

Address: Rue Bachir, Beirut Central District (Downtown)
