"The Road to Hana" Maui Things to Do Tip by H-TownJourneyman

Hana itself is a beautiful place on east Maui, but the excursion getting there can be an adventure in & of itself! Mountains with cascading waterfalls, beaches of many colors & shades, and towering cliffs are just some of the many interesting things you will experience during your drive. The Hana Highway begins in Kahului by the airport, and runs the perimeter of the northern shore of Maui, curving around onto the eastern shore. As you begin your journey, make a stop in Pa'ia, a very colorful town with many shops, restaurants, and the last stoplight you will see! After Pa'ia, the adventure begins! You will notice many people stopped on the side of the road. There are several streams & natural pools formed at the bottom of the many waterfalls. Great picture oppotunities here! Beaches like the one at Wai'anapanapa State Park with it's black sand, and Red Sand Beach with, what else, it's fabulous red sand, are beautiful and rare sights to see along the way. And if you are craving a snack, there are a few food stands beside the road as you move along. The roads can be a little intimidating, especially as you navigate along the cliffs towering over the ocean, the waterfalls pouring onto the street, and the one lane bridges. And with some of the locals racing around every corner, it all makes for a less than boring drive! Whatever part of Maui you might be staying at, the earlier you start the drive to Hana, the better. The drive itself is just over 30 miles, but it will take you several hours, navigating the winding roads, making many stops to take pictures, and contending with the other hundreds of people on the road as well. But this journey is one that is worth beating the sun to rise!
