Scott Monument, Edinburgh: 63 reviews and 131 photos
The Scott Monument was built by raising money from the public, its design by George Meikle Kemp [a carpenter] a self-taught architect . Who drowned in the Union Canal in 1844 before it was finished.
John Steell's seated statue of Sir Walter Scott with Maida his dog was added in1846.
287 steps takes you to the top. On the way up on the first Gallery is the Museum Room.
Characters [64 statuettes] from Scott's novels occupy niches in the monument.
Sir Walter Scott was more important than is J.K.Rowling today.
Perhaps we will build her a monument too someday.
