"Riksdaghuset" Riksdagen - Swedish Parliament Tip by Pieter11

The only big building at the small island of Helgeandsholmen is the Riksdaghuset, the Parliaments building. It consists of two main parts that are devided by the Riksbron: an important connection between Gamla Stan and Norrmalm.

The oldest parts of the building were built around 1900. This is the part you can see the best from Norrbron, the other bridge towards the island. It has some tall pillars, all built in a style with huge bricks in a pink colour. This part is hardly used. The newer part was built at the other side of the Riksbron. In the 70's there was a big renovation of the building which also included the construction of the round, glass facade that is best visible from Vasabron. This part is where the Swedish Parliament has their meetings.

The members of the Parliament are often seen in the surroundings of the Riksdaghuset, having their lunch or dinner in one of the many restaurants. Another famous way to spend their time is in the day nursery that is inside the building. The story goes that this is very often visited during the long, boring parliament meetings.

It's possible to have a tour through the building. Tour in English are daily between the end of June and the end of August, and are at 12:30 and 14:00.
