"Yarra Valley" State of Victoria Things to Do Tip by leffe3

State of Victoria Things to Do: 159 reviews and 358 photos

A wonderful, fertile expanse skirting the eastern/north-eastern borders of the city of Melbourne and extensive suburbs. It's eastern edge is the spectacular Yarra Ranges National Park - and the land between Melbourne and the NP is a gently undulating green of pastures, vineyards and the occasional historic town/homestead.

To most visitors, the Yarra Valley is the stretch between Lilydale (the end of the suburban train line from central Melbourne) and Healesville where there's a concetration of some of the finest/more popular vineyards to be found with ever open barn doors. Here you will find vineyards whose wine graces many of Melbourne's best restaurants, including Tarra Warra (see separate tip), de Bortoli, Chandon and Yering Station. The main towns that serve the immediate area are Healesville (including the sanctuary - see separate tip) and Yarra Glen. Just north of Yarra Glen is Gulf Station, a National Trust classified farm from the 1850s.

Sadly, without your own transport, touring the Yarra Valley is not easy. But there are many day tours on offer, and the one's touring the vineyards are a good option, especially if you want to try the samplings at the Barn Doors.
