1. Old Sailor's Hotels 2. Every Man's Right: "Cheap sleeping for the adventureous" Bergen Hotel Tip by hindu1936

Bergen Hotels: 96 reviews and 94 photos

1. In both Bergen and Oslo in Norway, and in Gotteberg, Sweden, there are lodgings that traditionally were offered to the down and out (re: drunk and broke) sailors. These hotels were, and still are well managed, clean, and VERY cheap. Spartan, yes, but clean, safe, and warm are the main things. I have stayed in all three cities at these hotels and was more than satisfied. They all allowed me to bring my bicycle inside where it was put into a storage room. In Oslo, the city bus stop is just about 50' from the door, so getting around is no problem.

2. Backpackers and hikers (and bikers who carry all their own gear) should also know about Every Man's Right. In both countries, if there is open ground more than about 1/4 mile from from public buildings, you can camp there without charge. This includes public parks unless posted otherwise, farmers fields, hidden copses beside highways and so on. I used these places for several weeks while traveling from Bergen to Denmark.

Unique Qualities: no pools, no dining, no room service. clean rooms, amiable management.

Price Comparison: least expensive
Price: less than US$20
Theme: Other
