  La Joute...without the fire
by excentrus

Head on down to Parc Jean-Paul Riopelle (named after the famous canadian artist) front of the multi-coloured Palais des congres. Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle hosts the kinetic fountain/sculpture "La Joute" from the artist. This monumental sculpture from Riopelle is showcased in a circular pool where a ring of fire is spread out, in accordance with the artist's vision. This new public space was also planted with trees, which remind the visitor of an urban forest. Light channels and mist machines implanted in the ground create a unique environment in Montreal.
From mid-May to mid-October ever certain times in the evening, the show begins. The fire rings are lit, the steam machines are pumped up and "La Joute" comes to life. It is all under supervision because fire is involved...and you wouldn't want your kids to be playing in the fountain when it "comes to life". Really cool. The quartier international surrounding Parc Jean-Paul Riopelle is also a very interesting and successful urban developement., built over a large underground highway.

Address: Metro Place d'Armes, near Intercontinental Hotel
Directions: Quartier International, between downtown and Old Montreal
