Obviously food is a major concern for most people travelling in India. Just be sensible. I didn't eat much meat when I was there, you have fabulous veggie food whereever you go anyway. Don't eat the Salads, or anything that hasn't been cooked properly. Only eat Fruit and Veg you can peel. Only drink bottled water complete with sealed lid or filter/boil your own. You can eat from the street stalls in relative safety, as long as the food is cooked and hasn't been stood around for ages, eg, samosa's, omlettes. Don't have ice in your drinks as its usually from tap water. If you are ill with a stomch bug, always keep your self re-hydrated, drink plenty of fluids, and use re-hydration sachets, you can buy them from the chemists in India v cheap. DON'T take immodium or arret to stop your dihorrea unless in an emergeny, like a long bus journey or something, whatever is in your body that your body is trying to get rid of, don't plug it in there to multipy by taking immodium ! If you are really worried, call the doctor out, you will have to pay, but its peace of mind. You can buy any drugs to treat yourself with over the counter if you know what it is you need.
Bus travel can be scarey, obviously they crash etc. but generally they are not as dangerous as they feel. Saying that, most people I know take valium on long bus journey'. Oh, don't accept drinks from strangers, they may drug you. You can also lock your pack into the trunk of the bus with your own lock, don't put it on top of the bus, peope ride on top of the buses in India and may 'help themselves' to some of your stuff!!
Trains are great but same applies for baggage, you can lock your pack to the chair legs if you want, but don't leave it for long.
Backsheesh (bribery) is a pain, sometimes its good it you backsheesh a train official 20 rupees to find you a seat or a sleeper, but it can be bad, as the police may also ask you for Backsheesh, in some instances. Best thing is to pay them as you don't want to get taken to the station ! it just an unfortunate corruption.
As a woman, you will be stared at and 'accidently' bumped into in indian streets, they call it 'eve teasing', sometimes one might grab your breast or bum !! Its not a very nice experience, but best thing is to shout out loud about it in the street if it happens.
I feel quite safe in India as a woman, but don't throw caution to the wind and trapse round at night up dark alleys or anything, you are just asking for it !
