Definition of Gudeg - A gooey spicy concoction of of young jackfruit, coconut milk, garlic, coriander, palm sugar and other weird stuff you might not want to know (teakwood is sometimes added at the early cooking stage for that yummy brown colour). Gudeg is usually served on a banana leaf since the leaf produces a mouth-watering aroma when hot curry and rice is heaped unto it . A buffet of other possiblities accompanies the dish and they are - Chicken curry drenched with 'santan areh? (rich coconut milk sauce), ?krecek? curry (buffalo skin), tofu, tempeh and the humble chili sauce.

Favorite Dish: There's no doubt about it, Gudeg is gooey. One look at it and the Sloppy Joe comes to mind. And like its American cousin of goo, this spicy slop with succulent chunks of jackfruit flesh is delicious, especially when it is eaten with warm, white rice. Still, this is Yogya's hallmark dish. Why else would they called themselves the city of Gudeg? Also, they have an entire street (Sentra Makanan Khas Gudeg) of Gudeg restaurants, each eatery boasting of their version of curried goodness. I've decided that my favourite shop is Gudeg Wijilan Bu Lies.I did a little systematic study of the pots over there and concluded that they were the best since their curry was simmered in a big clay pot and stirred with a wooden spoon. Well, I was right, the gudeg was helluva good.
