"Windsor Castle" Windsor Things to Do Tip by unexplored
Windsor Things to Do: 148 reviews and 322 photos
The oldest continuously inhabited royal residence in Britain. Originally made of wood and was built by William the Conqueror in 1070 to guard the western approaches to London. Succesive monarchs have made alterations. King George V's affection for it was shown when he chose Windsor for his family surname in 1917. In 1992, a fire destroyed or damaged more than 100 rooms in the castle, but an extraordinary restoration was completed and today there is little to indicate that the fire ever happened.
The State Apartments are closed when the royal family are in residence.
