Datca Things to Do: 30 reviews and 61 photos
No road so a pleasant boat trip brings you to the old city of Knidos. The current ruins are not the original settlement but for commercial reasons this became it in the 4th century B.C. Built partly on the mainland and partly on the island of Triopion or cape Krio, connected by a sandy isthmus. The Dorians and Romans built many temples here but it became famous for its statues of Aphrodite. In the late Roman and early Byzantine eras the temples became churches.Population reached 70,000 at one time but due to earthquakes and pirate attacks it was abandoned.
The Agora, theatre,an odeum,a temple of Dionysius,a temple of muses and a temple of Aphrodite and many other buildings have been identified.
Knidos was probably of Lacedaemonian colonisation and formed part of the Dorian Hexopolis with Kos,Helicarnassus,Lindos,Karimos and Lalyssos.
Famous Knidians include Eudoxus the Astronomer,Ctesias the Persian historian and Sostratus the builder of the Pharos at Alexandria.
