The Small Clerical School was precursor of The Orthodox Seminary. It worked within school opened in 1749, named ?Pokrovobogorodocina? which was under the custody of mitropolitan Pavle Nenadovic. Council in Timisoara in 1790 decided that it should be allowed to found The General Seminary in Sremski Karlovci where young generations of orthodox priests would be educated. Instead of seminary a small clerical school was founded on 1st of February, 1794 by mitropolitan Stevan Stratimirovic. He also paid for all the expenses. At that time school had two classes.
Since 1891/92 lectures were held in one wing of the new Gymnasium building. New name - ?Pravoslavna srpska bogoslovija u Karlovcima? (Serbian Orthodox Seminary in Karlovci) was given in 1906. School functioned without breaks until the First World War. Since 1920 school had belonged to Seminary of St. Sava which was previously in Belgrade. During the war they lost their building and they decided to move to Sremski Karlovci. The Council of Archbishops, held in May, 1967, declared it autonomous educational institution under the name ?Bogoslovija Sv. Arsenija Sremca u Sremskim Karlovcima? (The Seminary of St. Arsenius of Srem in Sremski Karlovci). That name remained until these days. Nowadays school has around 180 pupils from Serbia and abroad and their lessons take place in The Palace of Common Funds, designed in 1901 by the architect Vladimir Nikolic.
