"One reason people are..." Local Food Tip by lillapenguin

Local Food, Bangkok: 52 reviews and 130 photos

One reason people are attracted to Thailand is because at some stage they have sampled Thai food and loved it. I myself and crazy about hot and spicy food. Not only is it healthy, its tasty and extremely varied.
When coming to a city like Bangkok, you can become overwhelmed by choice when it comes to eating out. On almost every street you can see small restaurants, street vendors and such, and the smell often makes your mouth water. If your a first timer to the city, then take a good look around. Where you see Thai people eating, its usually because its cheaper than most places and the menu can be somewhat overwhelming (don't be surprised to spot frog soup or grasshoppers on some menus!!). These places can be good to eat and if you see foreigners eating in there then its probably OK. However you can find excellent eating places that are air conditioned and excellent value for money. Inside MBK (Marboonkhrong) shopping centre on the top two floors you can find great big eating places. Trade you money for coupons (refundable) and choose from the many restaurants availible, mostly serving Asian dishes. Some restaurants have hygeine certificates, giving you less chance of getting diahoreaa related infections.
Furthur up from this section you can find more expensive restaurants.
Inside the world trade centre also you can find good restaurants, aswell as the typical western sytle eating houses (McD's, BK, pizza hut etc...) nice if your missing your home jucky food!!!
Of course these aren't the only places you can eat. Bangkok is so big its almost impossible to list all the good restaurants, but I must mention some more, its behind the Novotel, and pretty big, the staff are so friendly and the menu is excellent as the food, sorry can't remeber the name!
Prik-ee-noo (literally meaning chilli) is a fantastic restaurant, hot and tasty, and next to an Irish pub!!
Cheap! Tasty! Vegetarian! All night!! Friendly staff! (Trying to talk Thai always makes them smile)

Favorite Dish: Must try 'Tom Yam' or 'Tom Kaa'(coconut dishes are extremely popular) are a must try. Sate dishes also... It is not reccomended to eat locally caught sea food as the pollution from the sea near Bangkok is particulary bad, so its better to avoid things like crab. Most fish are OK but taste better when caught from islands (try Koh Samui),places like Phuket, Pattaya and the islands are better if you want to try seafood.
