Fremantle Prison, Fremantle: 50 reviews and 96 photos

The gallows were built in 1888 and was the only place of legal executions in Western Australia. During the existence of their use, 43 men and 1 woman was hanged there. Edgar Eric Cooke was the last person to be hanged at the prison in 1964. He was a murderer and suspected of also being a serial killer. His body was buried in an unmarked pauper?s grave at Fremantle Cemetery and was laid to rest on top of serial killer Martha Rendell, the only woman to be hanged at the prison. For 20 years after his hanging, death sentences were commuted to terms of imprisonment until capital punishment was finally abolished in the State during 1984.
