The West Workshops were built between 1900 and 1901 in order to provide work for prisoners. There are five workshops in all and housed trades which were relevant ot the English Prison system. There was a shoe maker, book binder, tailor shop, mat maker and a paint shop. Today the building houses the WA School of Art, Design and Media as well as the Prisoners Art Gallery.
