Favorite thing: Coming home from a journey doesn't mean that the journey is completely over. You relive the events again and again, share the experiences with others, and naturally feel the necessity to broaden your knowledge of the place. Especially if a place is as fascinating as Israel. No wonder that now, about 6 months after coming back, I still can't give up this subject. The seed was sown...
I've just read a book by Amos Oz. It's an autobiographical novel in which this Israeli writer born in Jerusalem depicts several generations of his forefathers and their lives, first in Lithuania and Ukraine, then in Palestine. The birth of Israeli state, which I knew only from a few 'dry' encyclopedic entries, here gets a very human dimension. The book, although full of very sad or even tragic events, emanates with unique warmth and humour.
Great writing, where the background for family story is the history of the nation and state.
