The old cry from the Age of Exploration, 'Gold, Glory, and Gospel', is truly represented here in Kolkata. Besides creating a commercial and geopolitical empire, the British certainly didn't forget who they owe their successes to. The first church to be built in the city was the St John's Church on Council House St. It dated back to the 18th century and clearly shows its age in what is a rather neglected building. A short stroll from the church leads to a graveyard that includes such luminaries like Job Charnock, founder of Kolkata and Admiral Watson. Another place of worship worth visiting is the St Paul's Cathedral just opposite from the Victoria Memorial.
