Located in Barrio Alto, Largo Trinidad Coelho is an unassuming square home to one of the hidden gems of the district.

The Irena de Sao Roue is a 16th-century Jesuit church located at the northern end of the square. From the outside it is very plain looking and easily passed by without a second glance. But take the time to pop your head inside as you will be amazed at the grandeur within.

The interior is lavish - filled with marble, amethyst and ivory, along with Florentine hand painted tiles. There are frescoes on the wood-panelled ceiling and golden chapels.

Adjacent to the church is the Museu de Sao Roué, which houses a collection of 16th & 17-century sacred art.
