"Largo do Carmo" Carmo Convent & Museu Arqueológico Tip by sue_stone
Carmo Convent & Museu Arqueológico, Lisbon: 46 reviews and 98 photos
The small Largo do Carmo is located in Chiado and is home to a couple of special attractions.
Here you can see the ruins of the Convento do Carmo. The convent was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake that devastated the city. During the quake the roof of the convent caved in on the worshippers. Today all that remains is the tall gothic arches and walls of the main chapel.
The convent is now home to the Museu Arqueologico do Carmo, which houses religious artefacts from across Portugal.
Unfortunately we did not have the time to visit the convent, but the outside was certainly interesting - especially where you could see the damage caused by the quake (beside the more obvious missing roof etc!)
You can enter Largo do Carmo via the walkway connected to Elevador de Santa Justa, or walk up the hill from Rua Garrett.
