One of the highlights of Kolkata is the Victoria Memorial, an elegant architecture to commemorate arguably the symbol of Britain's greatest period of golden age, Queen Victoria herself. This monument houses a vast collection of paintings, busts, statues and other memorabilia that remind visitors the imperial clout and grandeur of past times. To reach the memorial, one must walk through the spacious park complete with ponds, plants and statues. A chronicle of the construction of the site welcome visitors just right after the main entrance. Move ahead and you'll come face to face with the statue of a young Queen Victoria in the middle of the domed hall. Marvel at the paintings on the ceiling and Indian scripts surrounding the walls. In the wings of the hall is a gallery of exquiite oil paintings of various themes.
