"The Largest Banyan Tree in the World" Botanical Garden Tip by Nprawira
Botanical Garden, Kolkata (Calcutta): 14 reviews and 44 photos
Located in the Botanical Gardens, this peculiar 200 year old banyan tree has nearly 300 aerial roots, spread over 60m. For floral lovers, this garden hosts a wide range of indigenious plants including the Victoria Amazonica lily, said to be strong enough to hold a 4 year old child although I wouldn't recommend testing that claim. On the way to the garden, you'll most likely pass the Howrah Bridge if you go from north. Th bridge was built in a single 450m span to prevent silting in the Hooghly River. Everyday, millions cross the bridge by foot and thousands of vehicles stream through it to go to and from Kolkata. So it is wise to avoid the morning rush hour or alternatively take a boat to cross the river.
