The Church is possibly y most favourite building in Chichen Itza - because of its rich and well-preserved decorations. It is also one of the older parts of this Mayan city.

What makes it outstanding is the Puuc ornamentation: you can see well-defined carved masks of Chaac, the Mayan rain god on the front of the structure. On the other sides you can find several masks of animals (a crab, a snail, an armadillo and a turtle) which may represent the forces which supported the Mayan sky in the four directions. Of course there are also carving of snakes.

The Church takes its name from what the early spanish conquerors called it: Eglesia.

Directions: in Chichen Itza
