January 14 is another reason for celebrations: it is the Old New Year's Day, that is, the New Year according to the previous Julean calendar that existed in Russia before 1918. At present people see the Old New Year in as well.
We do it on the eve of the Old New Year's Day, that is, in the evening of January 13.
Since our celebrations mostly imply drinking ceremonies, visitors to Ukraine have to take into account the Ukrainian drinking habits at the holiday table when visiting a Ukrainian home.
Don't be surprised at seeing glasses of liquors drunk bottoms up. It is just a habit, which you can practise, too.
Don't forget to breathe out the air before you drink.:-)
We don't say "smooth" in that case, but we could say "Kharasho pashlah!", which means, literally, "She went well!" (vodka is feminine in Russian).
