In Pironal in Extremadura (near Caceres) they have an interesting fesitival where in January (this year it was on the 20th but I'm not sure if this changes) where they throw 'nabos' which are small turnips at a strange character (the jarrampla) dressed in colourful robes and a horned mask.

Everyone waits outside the church for the Jarrampla to exit then they start lobbing the nabos right at him. His costume weighs about 50kg which is lucky because he'll need a lot of protection against the hard veggies coming his way!

They say it is a good way for the people to get rid of all their anger although they are unsure about the origin of the fiesta.

This is the song they sing during the festival.

Ayer tarde un piornalego
amargamente lloraba
porque no alcanzaba el burro
al pilar a beber agua

La mujer del Jarrampla
est? dormida
y si no se levanta
no come migas
Patateros en Piornal
le?adores en Garganta
en Collado buenos pastos
y en Torremenga los randas

Tres cosas hay en Piornal
que no las tiene Plasencia
agua fr?a, pan moreno
y cabrillas en las piernas

Sebasti?n Valeroso
hoy es tu d?a
todos te festejamos
con alegr?a
